Our amazing creative residents

It's been a busy weekend so far, and we are looking forward to many more visitors in the coming week for the Open Studios Cornwall event.

Most of our guests have been surprised that anything exists beyond the gallery. The labyrinth of rooms which make up the event space and studios span all three floors of the building aren’t apparent from the front of the building but are put to good use by our residents.

Our resident artists Dave, Lee and Derek beaver away behind the scenes creating masterpieces while Sam is often found hammering away at her keyboard as she crafts her creativity in words. In COVID free times our event space is rented out privately or used for Sketch Trips courses and The Writers Collective talks.

Dave Pentin, a web developer by day, loves to get his hands dirty with pencils, paint and inks in the evenings and weekends. A design graduate of Falmouth School of Art, Dave picked up his pens and paintbrushes again after a 20-year gap and is working towards retirement enjoying experimenting with gum arabic and acrylic inks. A big supporter of beach cleans, the Cornwall Film Festival and Street Draw 24, he likes to give a little back whenever he can.

Lee Kellgren is a Cornwall-based printmaker who specialised in limited-edition etchings. After many years in Bristol as a member of Spike Print Studio, Lee now has a studio on the top floor and has recently been working in oils after a very successful course with Kerry Harding via St Ives School of Art. Inspired by the landscape around her, she has been creating layered work in muted tones that soothe and calm the onlooker.

Derek Hayes is an award-winning animator, currently teaching at Falmouth University, and an artist who likes to wrestle with the lessons of the great masters of Art. Inspired as much by the Renaissance as by Picasso he would love to settle on one technique, but inevitably is drawn to any and all ways of saying something about the clash of ancient ideas and the modern world. A fountain of knowledge, his work is playful and experimental.

New work will be posted for their annual exhibition in the gallery on 20 May - 6 June 2021
