Heather McAlpine was born in Stirling, Scotland, she studied in London achieving a
BA (Hons) from the University of East London and an MA (RCA) from the Royal
College of Art in 1995. She lived in Vancouver, Canada until 2014.

Returning to the UK to live in the artistic community of St Ives where she currently works from her studio in Whites Old Workshops.

Heather is a member of the St. Ives Society of Artists and the Newlyn Society of Artists.

Heather's recent paintings are inspired by her love of wild swimming.
This has given her a new perspective and access to the sea year-round. One of her favourite places to swim is Porthminster Point, which is usually isolated as it takes a bit of clambering over the rocks to get to the sea, the rocks are covered in small barnacles and ochre-colored seaweed, and at low tide the colours are at their best.

Heather loves the sense of isolation, entering the cold water helps her focus on the present and there is a sense of achievement as her body adjusts to this watery world, bobbing with the swell taking in the clouds the odd seal, the smell of the seaweed on the rocks and gives her plenty of inspiration, and a deep sense of calm as her body core temperature cools down.
