Past and present resident artists

In our studio space we have been able to provide a sunsidised creative space for a variety of artists including..

Dave Pentin
Dave is an artist and web developer who loves to get his hands dirty with pencils, paint and inks in his spare time.

A design graduate of Falmouth School of Art, Dave picked up his pens and paintbrushes once again after a 20-year gap while running art courses in the French Alps.

Now permanently back in the Cornish landscape he is enjoying experimenting with gum arabic and acrylic inks, and running workshops to share this fascinating layering technique. A big supporter of beach cleans, the Cornwall Film Festival and Street Draw 24, he likes to give a little back whenever he can.

Lee Kellgren & Derek Hayes
Lee is a Cornwall-based printmaker specializing in limited-edition etchings and now also working in oil paint.

Delicate and atmospheric original etchings using a traditional copper plate. Using marks and acid with soft-ground, sugar-lift and aquatint to create prints that are like painterly landscapes. Also uses photogravure etchings to create subtle, other-worldly images about the quality of light in an image.  After many years in Bristol as a member of Spike Print Studio, Lee She is currently working on using colour and layers in semi-figurative oil and acrylic paintings.

Derek is an award-winning animator, currently teaching at Falmouth University, and an artist who likes to wrestle with the lessons of the great masters of art.
Inspired as much by the Renaissance as by Picasso he would love to settle on one technique, but inevitably is drawn to any and all ways of saying something about the clash of ancient ideas and the modern world.

Maggie Cochran
In her paintings, Maggie aspires to recreate the feeling of being on the beach - the freedom, joy, energy, serenity, the awe of the sheer beauty, power and magnificence of the coastal landscape. Her abstracted technique allows her to capture a sense of timelessness in the movement of the tides and weather as they roll in and out of the scene adding a calm contemporary feel to her work.

Maggie has a Fine Arts degree from the University of Chichester and has recently completed the one-year Porthmeor Programme in St Ives.

Dawn Dance
Dawn grew up in the rugged South West peninsular of Cornwall. She trained at Falmouth School of Art followed by a Fashion and Textiles degree at Kingston upon Thames. She has taught a wide range of art and design-based courses in Further and Secondary education alongside running her own businesses as a decorative artist, antiques restorer and gilder.
Dawn returned to Cornwall in 2016 and gave up teaching to concentrate on painting the landscape she knows so well.

Kieran Brimson
Kieran's career as a professional photographer started in late 2011 with a degree in video production and three years London experience in film. He already had a strong idea of how to manipulate light, colour and space that would provide as a perfect stepping stone to make the switch to the frozen image so a progression into professional photography was inevitable.

Since 2011 he has photographed over 100 Cornish sunrises, explored the vast lands of America and some of the iconic cities of Europe. Within every photograph he finds an opportunity to capture something that has never been taken before, and tries to keep that in mind every time he ventures out.

For Kieran photography is not capturing reality, it is capturing a perception of reality. It is not just about seeing what is beautiful, it is understanding why it is beautiful and and knowing how to transfer your own mood and feeling onto a piece of art.

Ella Griffee - sustainable clothing

Ella designs and make clothes to be worn and weathered. To be passed down by loved ones to those searching for a piece of home to carry with them.

She is inspired by styles and materials that she comes back to time and time again, from the well-worn jackets that stay on the coat rack for all of the family to use, to the oversized shirts she acquired from her Dad.

Ella uses natural materials which breathe and move with our bodies, and design carefully considered styles that provide a cocoon of familiarity and comfort.

With industry experience in London, Worcestershire and Cornwall, it’s the raw, romantic landscape of Cornwall and its people that continue to inspire her. Ella lives and works in Cornwall.

With the help of a sustainable product designer, her blue buttons are 3D printed, from recycled end-of-life Cornish fishing nets. These are hauled into Newlyn and then printed, before being sewn on by her garments. These beautiful buttons are the first of their kind and this marine nylon has 97% less environmental impact in comparison to virgin nylon.
