3-day course or daily workshops in Gum & Ink painting course with Dave Pentin
Friday - Sunday
04-06 November 2022
Penryn, Cornwall

6 places available

Cornish Artist Dave Pentin uses an unusual gum and acrylic ink technique to paint landscapes.

During the workshop he will teach you his unique painting technique which uses a series of alternating layers, applying a gum arabic masking solution, followed by washes of permanent acrylic ink until the original picture has disappeared. The painting is then washed off to reveal what is underneath.

During these sessions, Dave will help students learn and experiment with his gum and ink technique and talk about the tools and skills involved such as stretching paper, deciding on a composition, colour mixing, sketching out, layering with ink and applying a gum mask.

Dave’s course will be broken down into a mixture of daily workshops. The first two days will include a 3hr tutored studio session every morning (9-12) followed by a 2hr sketching session in the afternoon. The third day will be a day of studio work.

WORKSHOP ONE (Friday 9-3 pm) – you will be introduced to the techniques of using gum & Ink painting. Then after lunch, you will join dave for a 2hr Plein air sketching session to find a composition for the following day. Dave will answer any queries back at the studio after the session, then you will be asked to do some homework on the first night to transfer your composition onto paper or board.

WORKSHOP TWO (Saturday 9 -3 with optional talk until 4 pm) – you will start the first layers of your first composition with Dave’s guidance. Then afternoon will be spent creating a second composition to work on concurrently the next day.  Alli Marshall a former student of Dave’s, will give a short talk about how she uses the same technique for her work which will be on exhibition in the gallery. You will also be invited to stay on for the private viewing in the evening (6-8 pm), where drinks and nibbles will be on offer to help celebrate her new collection of work. There will be some homework for the evening to prep a second smaller abstract piece of work for the Sunday session.

WORKSHOP THREE (Sunday 10-4 pm) – starts an hour later at 10 pm and will include a whole day in the studios to work on two pieces, building up layers and washes concurrently.

This course is non-residential, however delicious buffet lunches, plenty of tea coffee and cakes or biscuits are available during the workshops/courses.
Nearby B&B Accommodation is available from £320 for 4 nights – evening meals are an extra cost.
